Servicing Your Car Through Winter
Freezing temperatures outside can cause havoc with your vehicle’s engine. So, when winter comes around it’s a good idea to make sure that your car is fully prepared for all eventualities.
It’s a good idea to check that everything’s ok under the bonnet – obviously it’s important to check that everything’s in good working order all year round- but it’s especially important in the winter as you can make sure that everything’s suited to chilled conditions.
First and foremost you should ensure that you are stocked up on antifreeze. Your car should contain a 50/50 mix of water and anti freeze – make sure that the container is full up!
You tyres are also really important, particularly in the wet, cold or wind. They will ensure that you have plenty of grip and remain on the road . Take your time checking the tred depth, and if they are only just road legal I would recommend changing them....you don’t want to risk your safety. Some use a 20p to check the depth . Place it in the groove and you shouldn’t be able to see the rim at all – check it around a few points in the tyre. You should then check the tyre pressure as tyres actually lose a bit of pressure in the cold. An under inflated tyre will also use up more fuel so you’ll be saving yourself fuel money too.
The next step will be to replace the wind screen wipers if they aren’t up to scratch – make sure they look good and aren’t too worn – the last thing you want is to be left with a smeared and dirty windscreen.  Windscreen washer fluid will also help with this – so make sure you have your washer fluid topped up too!
Just take a little time out to check these things and you’ll feel happy in the knowledge that your car’s fit for winter!
