Vintage Zebco
Gears in a zebco 33, are they metal or plastic?
Need a couple reels for when I bring kids fishing, something cheap that can handle the occasional 3 or 7 pound hybrid striper or cat, naturally I thought of zebco 33. $20 apiece is about all I'm gonna spend -- but I've read that the ones in stores now have plastic gears...can this be true?
If you have a recent model, would you be so kind as to open it up and tell me the truth?
If these rumors are true, seems like maybe it'd be better to buy vintage gear from ebay -- or what's the best alternative -- any opinions?

Yes, it's true. Sorry to say, it's very true. A lot of Zebcos and Pflueger reels that are sold in most stores that carry some amount of Fishing Tackle have plastic gearing. Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc. etc. all sell those reels. You really would be better off going online or swapmeets/yard sales and finding a couple of Old Vintage Zebco Thirty-Threes with brass or aluminum gearing (or whatever material it is that they used to be made with) or some older Garcia or Daiwa push-button reels. But, they aren't gonna be no cheap twenty dollars, either...
I was started off by using an old Zebco Thirty-Three on a five-foot-six Lamiglass pistol grip rod, but that was over twenty years ago when even cheap reels were made with good, High Quality components. Lucky me. I feel sorry for both the parents and kiddies that have to deal with all these really, really cheap and low quality products nowdays.
