African Spotted Leaf Fish (Ctenopoma acutirostre) Problem?
Hi everyone I just got a small African Spotted Leaf Fish (Ctenopoma acutirostre).
He's very small, about 2-3inches in length. I did all the proper procedures of letting his bag sit on the water and slowly adding water into the bag. The whole process lasted about 1 hour and a half. This is the second day that I own him, and he's pretty much hiding inside my ornamental tree trunk. Pretty much out of sight, sometimes I'll see him lurk around exploring but when I make any movements he'll just retreat back to the tree trunk.
I am afraid that he is going to starve to death because he's too afraid to go out and look for food. Do you think it's a good idea for me to just place some bloodworms under his cave and lure him out to eat it?
I got him at Petsmart and they told me that they feed him flakes and bloodworms once a week.
Any help as to luring him out and getting more accustomed to me would help greatly. I'd hate to see my first fish die, especially over fear.
First of all 1 1/2 hours is far too long,sometimes fish get stressed by in the bag too long and really 15 - 20 minutes is long enough. These fish like to disguise themselves as dead leaves and slowly come down to the grit looking for small fish. You should put plants that have broad leaves then it will hide amongst the plants.
It will starve if you try to feed it flakes and bloodworms but it wont starve if you feed it small unwanted fish or even live river shrimps. When it has eaten all it wants it will swim back to the plants and rest and only come down again when feels hungry.
That was for the South American Leaf Fish but for the African Leaf Fish it's best to give it live food.
