Fishing Reel line ratings: Mono vs. Braid?
I'm looking to buy a Daiwa Sealine-X SHA30. The reel is rated for 25 lb mono at 235 yds, I believe. If I put 30 lb, braid on it, will that stress the reel? Thanks.
Sealines will handle about 100lb braid. I WOULD NOT put 30lb braid on that reel. 30lb braid is about 8lb mono diameter, you'll be getting somethng around 650-700yds on there. That's a lot of line...unless you're trying to get way down. I would consider using something more like 65-80lb braid or 40-60lb dacron with a 25-40lb mono backing. Mono backing helps to keep the braid from slipping on the spool.
Besides, on non-levelwind reels, like yours, you have to thumb the line....I would not want to thumb 30lb braid, EVER. That can seriously injure you. If you are set on 30lb, make sure you have a thumb cover or line glove to protect your fingers.
